Gilmore Girls is all about mother daughter relationships: both good ones and bad ones. The main relationships are going to be between Lorelai and her daughter Rory and Lorelai and her mother Emily. It shows how some generations threaten to repeat mistakes while others are learned from.

One mother/daughter duo who is there for comic relief mostly is Mrs. Kim and Lane Kim. They are a strongly religious Korean family. Lane spends most of the show trying to hide the fact that she is in a band and eats fast food so her mom doesn’t find out. When Mrs. Kim finds out Lane moves out. Then she finds out that she actually has a lot in common with her mom. Her mom even takes over her band career at one point as she is really determined to make it a success. This goes to show that sometimes it’s better to be honest. You never know who your mother really is until you give her a chance to be honest as well.
